The Wall Between Us: What a Mother Needs Her Daughter to Hear

There comes a moment when a mother realizes she may not have forever to say what her heart has carried for years. This letter is written from that place — a place of truth, longing, and hope — for the daughter who feels far away, and for every woman who has ever loved a child she can’t quite reach.

Dear daughter of mine,

Thank you for being here with me tonight. Come, sit with me. You and I need to talk.

Sweet girl, this may be one of the hardest conversations we’ve ever shared. My heart is full, my mind is heavy, and before I say anything else, I need you to hear this: I love you. There is nothing you could ever say or do that would change that truth.

But I need to understand something… What have I done to help build this wall between us?

Yes, we talk — but only on the surface. You don’t seem to want to share the deeper things, the hard things, the things that shape your days and weigh on your spirit.

Baby, as your mama, I know when something is going on. Maybe it’s intuition, or maybe it’s simply knowing you better than you give me credit for. You grew within my body. You felt my heartbeat from the inside, and I felt every flutter of yours. There was a time when I was your whole world. I don’t expect that now — you’re a grown woman — but when something is hurting you, when something is bothering you, I just want to be there. Yet you don’t seem to want me that close anymore. Why?

Sweetie, there are moments when love stands quietly between two people, waiting for courage to rise.

This letter — this conversation — is for you, my daughter, and for every mother hoping her daughter will let her in, and every daughter who isn’t sure how to begin.

I’m writing this because it’s time — time for the conversation we’ve both been tiptoeing around. My darling girl, you have always been my baby. We don’t always see eye to eye, maybe because we’re so alike. From the moment I held you, I knew our bond would be fierce, loving, stubborn, and unbreakable. That’s what mothers and daughters do.

What I didn’t expect was the distance you’ve felt the need to place between us.

Dear daughter, my time here is slipping forward faster than I’d like. There are still so many unspoken truths living quietly between us. I’m closer to my end than my beginning now, and soon you’ll step into the role of matriarch. I know you’ll carry it with grace and strength — you were born for it. You are my daughter.

The hardest part of growing older is knowing I’ll leave you behind. I know you’ll survive it — it’s the circle of life — but as your mother, I never want you to feel that kind of pain. I never want you to feel that void. And yet, it’s a hurt I cannot protect you from.

As I age toward my last breath, I need you to hear me. Whatever you’re keeping from me — whatever feels too heavy, too painful, too complicated — I wish you could see me not only as your mother, but as your friend.

I’ve been in your shoes. I’ve walked lonely miles of heartbreak. I’ve carried pain I didn’t think anyone could understand.

I wish you could trust me. I will never judge you, never belittle you, never see you as anything less than who you truly are. You are worthy. You are beautiful. You deserve joy. You can never, and will never, let me down.

Are you happy, my girl? Have you outgrown the life you thought you’d have with him? Has he hurt you?

Dear daughter, it’s okay to cry — it doesn’t make you weak. It’s okay to start over — it doesn’t make you a quitter. It’s okay to choose peace — life is shorter than any of us realize, and you were never meant to carry sadness as a companion.

I am here for you. If you need to talk, to cry, or simply sit beside me in silence, I’m here. Nothing you say could ever change my love for you.

I wish I knew how to bring you back to me, the way you used to trust me. I wish I knew how to show you that your pain breaks my heart too.

This isn’t only about your hurt — it’s about mine. When you hurt, I hurt. And I hurt even more knowing you don’t feel you can come to me.

As I write this, my heart is breaking. Tears fall like a river I cannot stop.

Your whole life, all I ever wanted was to protect you. But as we both grow older, I’m realizing something stands between us now — a barrier I never saw coming. I always thought we were the mother and daughter who shared everything. I was wrong. You’ve built a wall, and I don’t know how to take it down. I don’t know how to reach you. I don’t know how to show you that I am still your fiercest advocate.

I love you more than these words can express. Even if we aren’t as close as I wish we were, you still hold the key to my heart. I hope you can see me not just as your mom, but as a woman — a human being who has made mistakes, maybe even some of the same ones you’ve made.

If my last breath comes before we break down the walls between us, there are things I pray you carry with you.

No matter where our relationship stood, I loved you. That never changed. If you’re still carrying heaviness when my time comes, I hope you find your way to releasing it — and when you do, I’ll be smiling from above.

Carry the parts of me that mattered. My unwavering love — give that to your children. My stubbornness — keep the parts that make you strong and let go of the parts that make life harder than it needs to be. Living softly is easier than living to prove a point. Love fiercely. Forgive freely, especially yourself. Nothing in this world is worth carrying as a burden. And forgive me where I failed you. I never meant to let you down.

All I ever wanted was to love you. I know sometimes it looked like I was trying to fix you or fix your life — that was the only way I knew how to show love. Maybe that was my mistake. Maybe that’s where the wall began. Forgive me for that.

As my days begin their final descent into whatever comes next, I’m still here for you. I’ll always be here for you — maybe not in a physical body, but always in spirit. Carry this with you until your own final breath: I have always been proud of you.

I love you.

If this letter becomes the last thing I ever give you, let it be proof that my love outlived my time.

Holding space for every story,
Dawna‑Rae 🦋
